27 Oct 2010 - A program to show pure black areas in a photo has been added - just for interest.
So that we know where we cannot get any more detail out of these areas. (however, there are far less pure black areas in even JPG images from the PDS)

that is because the naming convention says that filenames have to be 27 characters long. This one is from lyle.org which does not stick to the nasa naming convention.

2P180077127RADAEM5P2375L257C1.JPG - this part I assume is the fact that it is colour? I dont know what naming convention lyle.org uses but it is NOT the nasa one, so that is why it does not work.

To get the nasa file name, break the file name above down. Use this process

L257C1.JPG
These are the filters, so choose 1 (example 7) make that L7
Replace the C1 with M1 and you get
2P180077127RADAEM5P2375L7M1.JPG

so put that in and see the result.

Why on earth it refuses to decode

photo id (2P180077127RADAEM5P2375L257C1.JPG) you have entered is incorrect due to incorrect length.
Please go back and review your entry. confuse

24 Oct 2010 - I have placed a new version of the File name Decode on the website.

This one is much better as it decodes anything that looks like a Mars Rover filename. You do not have to enter the full url or even the extension it can just be 1P339388524EFFAS00P2418L2M1 and it will decode it. If the Sol number is calculated it will tell you otherwise it gets it from the database which should be spot-on everytime.

Equally it could be /1/p/2379/1P339388524EFFAS00P2418L2M1.JPG too.

It still gives the PDS link to the JPG file but ONLY if there is one.

If you have entered a partial URL, then it gives a link to the marsrover.jpl.nasa website that we all use as well.

21 Oct 2010 - I have added PDS links to the file name decode (as well as marsrovers.nasa.jpl links if you did not enter a URL from that site eg:http://example.com/{photoid} )

Also the search program has PDS links at the end of each line.

I have only provided links where I'm certain of the sol number as the name decoder is sometimes one sol off either side of the correct sol number.

The PDS links are to the JPG version which is in the browse directory. They are not links to the hi-res version since I do not have a program yet to extract the image from the .img file (too technical for some, I expect)

16 sept 2010 - I have added a program which gives EXIF data and any other embedded data that has been stored in the photograph. Enter a URL in the space provided. You can save the output in either tab-delimited format or comma separated format by clicking on the file links at the bottom of the information.

There are a number of these around, but this particular routine I found on the internet and used for this program appears to extract relevant data from a lot of different types of file - not only JPG and TIF files.

lately I have been messing about with some new programs.

The most recent is designed for anyone who does not know how to create gifs from a sequence of URLs and is experimental. It works fairly well in my browsers but may not in yours. Basically, what you do is to enter a series of 2 or more URLs and the program will make a kind of gif (not really a gif, but more a switching of pictures to the same browser space one after another). I thought it would be useful to see if there was any movement in the pictures you find. I have provided some examples using a 1024pixel x 1024 pixel sequence which is the maximum allowed at the moment. You can choose the quadrant you want to display.

Prior to that I have a report on the number of picture filenames in the database, a site analysis program, and a javascript see-it-as-it-happens colourise your black and white photos (so you can see what they look like before you create the larger one.)

Let me know if you find any problems or have any requests but I think that will be all I do for a while.
