Hi Xenon, Yes it could be I suppose - although there are several others after that date in other directories - I dont understand the whole thing. These photos are labelled as from Spirit with a 2 at the start of the name and they are also from the Pancam as a 'P' in the second position.

This image for example is in the 19 Nov 2010 directory and although it does not show the bottom of the image due to bad data, I think that any condensation would have spread over the whole lens or disappeared or changed position in that time. May to November is a fair length of time.

I think the Pancam camera chip or Spirit system memory may be dying 'cos September and November pics look the same with bad data at the bottom, but as I say, I just dont understand why we have pics after the rover is supposed to have died.

Look at the others in the later and earlier directories. some are sun pictures (June 2011 !!!) and some are calibration pics and some are normal but for bad data areas.

This one from the 16may10 as another example seems to have some bad data in it but there are also some areas in it which are reasonably OK.

Just found this on Wikipedia which says that NASA tried to co
The rover continued in a stationary science platform role until communication with Spirit stopped on sol 2210 (March 22, 2010). JPL continued to attempt to regain contact until May 24, 2011, when NASA announced that efforts to communicate with the unresponsive rover had ended, calling the mission complete

Very interesting topic Q, to me it looks like spores/mold or condensation on the lens (but that could be wishful thinking on my part), I suppose it could be smoke, but wouldn't smoke look and react differently due to the type of Martian athmosphere and its density?

I was surprised to see these at the exploratorium website, yet they have all of the MER images there so I assumed they were fairly reliable as a source. Maybe they are not a reliable source and maybe I shouldn't assume either. The name of the image file is from Spirit (starting with a '2') so I dont know what is going on there.

I think we were told that Spirit just did not wake up after the winter period weren't we? Cannot remember now.

For anyone who cannot be bothered to go to the exploratorium site, herre are 3 images to show you what I was talking about. They may look the same but they are taken through different filters 4,3,2,

Interesting photos, but I though Spirit died before that?

The rover became stuck in late 2009, and its last communication with Earth was sent on March 22, 2010?

I thought you would like to discus these images I found today. They appear to show some smoke coming from Spirit a few days before the photos stopped being posted online. They are all from 17th May 2010 and there is a sequence of about 8 or so. Maybe this is a young 'dust devil' just investigating Spirit and not really a fire at all?

Is the idea that Martians have evolved to have a smoke/energy/physical body such an outrageous idea for an alien species?

Also what is interesting too, is that after years of dust and dirt on Mars, this 17th May 2010 image of the solar panels shows they are still in pretty good shape with not much dust on them which might have been covering the cables and cells. Surprisingly, it isn't.

[sarcasm]Must be those wonderful dust storms which sweep the panels clean[/url] in "cleaning events". The cleaning power of the wind even gets into cracks and crevices on the rovers deck to sweep it clean showing the wiring really clearly.[/sarcasm]
