no, it needs a full URL, but if there is enough interest, it would be easy to modify the program slightly to send it a picture number instead.

Gmantoo, I have left the post with the actual link in the Mars Section, this was just put here to see if anyone could help.

I have used the link and it was perfect, you are a star clap.gif

Will it work just with the picture number i.e 2P12.....

Chandre: I cannot help thinking that people will not find it here - particularly as it relates to the mars rover photographs only and is not general at all. Anyway, it does not matter. I did it for myself to use and the thread is here for anyone else who needs it.

The program should be OK now for any of the examples below, not just for straight .jpg urls.

AliensRPeople2:
If you look at some of the URLs (the address of the web page), they have a long name for the photograph.

examples are
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/2/p/001/2P126471535EDN0000P2303L6M1.HTML
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/gallery/all/2/p/001/2P126471510EDN0000P2303L5M1-BR.JPG
http://areo.info/mer/spirit/1907/tn/2P295667757EDNB1DNP2281L5M1_L4L5L5L5L6.jpg.html

The part that starts 2P.... or 1P... tells us information about the photograph. Information like shown  in the example in the post above.

This tells NASA when it was produced and how and where etc. This is encoded into the name. The program decodes this information and spits it out in human readable format as shown.
All you have to do is paste the URL the web address into the box and it should decode it for you.

gmantoo, entry moved here....

Is there a site that decodes the file name? I am writing a program to do that if anyone is interested. It would tell us the site etc. This is what I have so far. Probably have it for you guys to test tomorrow sometime. I have a bug in the date part to sort out.
