bluecatconsidering it a photo of a rock face from a few metres away, the rectangle would be maybe an inch in size.

Size does not matter in an alien world. We have found plenty of small items which were out-of-place in an uninhabited world and many people believe there is no limit to the diversness of life throughout the universe. Big, small, carbon based, non-carbon based it really does not matter when the home environment is very different from our own and the species has had billions of years to develop.

Good point Mac, definitely worth investigating some more.

Good question. Maybe this is just a product of the Gigapan stitching process and not real. But if that were the case why isnt the mastcam right pic in the archive? Where did the gigapan author get his pics? No matter how you look at it, something is just wrong.

My question is, why is the anom redacted vs. smudged or "filled in" like NASA usually does? Maybe the editor was late for a dinner date.

That is a mastcam left photo and the rock covers the anom.  The mastcam right view of this has been cropped to delete the anom.

I do not know the source of the gigapan pic. but it appears to be the original mastcam right view.

I apologize. Too lazy to check. This crude forgery. Here is the original:   http://mars.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/?rawid=0840ML0037360070401405E01_DXXX&s=840

Problem with the above is that the image isn't from the source file :  http://www.gigapan.com/gigapans/167350

And if it was, considering it a photo of a rock face from a few metres away, the rectangle would be maybe an inch in size.

I found these two interesting things:

1) a perfect rectangle basement for a building?   http://i57.tinypic.com/qoubyf.jpg

2) A shelter?   http://i59.tinypic.com/2lu9rgw.jpg
